Human, All Too Human: Visualizing Stress with Human Figures  2011,

The title “Human, All Too Human”, is a reference to Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical exploration of the human condition. In this series, I dealt with my own stress by painting nude figures confined within physical structures. These suggest how one’s psychological state can be articulated through the body. Rather than using verbal language, I express the predicament of emotional suffering through depictions of nude bodies. This reflected my own experience; I was under extreme stress as I was struggling to make myself at home in a “foreign” environment, which included learning to speak and to write in English. I tried my best to remain in an indifferent way on the surface and pretended I was fine, but underneath I was constantly upset and disappointed with myself.
